In Rome

In Naples

In Europe

In the U.S.

The Palatine Museum

The Palatine Museum is also known as the Museo Palatino or the Palatine Antiquarium. It's on the south side of the Palatine Hill. The Palatine Hill is directly above the Roman Forum.

Info:  Subway Colosseo. Open daily. The entry ticket to the Palatine Hill includes the Museum. Guided tours in English are available in the summer. No English-language labels on the exhibits. No guidebook.

What to see:  First floor: Artifacts and decorations from buildings of the Imperial period,  (Augustus to the 4th c CE.) Terracotta panels, statues, and  decorations from Nero's palace before the great fire of 64 CE. High quality marble statues and portrait busts from the Imperial period.

   View from Palatine Hill
The Palatine Museum is in a plain, unexceptional building, but the views from the Palatine Hill are spectacular.

Capitoline Museums (Musei Capitolini)

The Capitoline Museums are on the Campidoglio above the Roman Forum. They are very easy to find: follow the crowds ascending the stairs from the Forum or from Michelangelo's stairs.

Good visitor guidebooks in English.

Rhineland State Museum (Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier, RLM)

An interesting collection, since the Romans made Trier a major outpost north of the Alps. At one point, Trier was an imperial capital.

Take a German dictionary.

The Museum's Web site has a wonderful short video showing the brilliant colors the Romans would have painted their statuary and other artifacts.  It will change your view of the colors of the classical world--not all was shiny white marble or terracotta. Life and Love in Ancient Rome, a music video
